Why Skiathos Is Worth Understanding

Skiathos has the finest beaches in the northern Aegean — full stop. The island is small (49 square kilometres) but its coastline holds over sixty sandy beaches, many sheltered by pine trees that reach the water's edge. Koukounaries — a lagoon beach backed by umbrella pines, with shallow, warm water — is consistently rated among the best beaches in Greece. Lalaria, on the northern coast, is accessible only by boat: a beach of smooth white pebbles under a dramatic limestone arch, with water the colour of a swimming pool. The combination of pine forest and clear sea creates a landscape that is unusual in the Aegean, which tends toward dramatic stone and bare hillside.

Skiathos is part of the Sporades group, northeast of mainland Greece. It was the setting for the original Mamma Mia! film in 2008 — actually shot partly on the island (though the fictional location is the Cyclades). The film brought significant tourist interest and the island is now well-established on the international package-holiday map. Skiathos Airport (JSI) receives direct summer charter flights from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and other European countries — making it one of the most accessible islands in the northern Aegean. The main town (Skiathos Town) has an active nightlife and a working port.

History and Heritage

Skiathos has a quieter history than the southern Aegean islands — less contested strategically, further from the major ancient trade routes. The island was inhabited in antiquity and is mentioned by Herodotus as the site where the Persian fleet assembled before the battles of Thermopylae and Artemisium (480 BC). The island came under Venetian, then Ottoman influence during the medieval period. The writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911) — often called the Greek Dostoevsky — was born on Skiathos, and his house is now a museum. His short stories, set on the island, are central texts in modern Greek literature.

Best Time to Visit

May through September. The beaches are at their best in June and September when the water is warm but the crowds thinner. July-August is peak season — Koukounaries and the main beaches are very busy, and Skiathos Town nightlife is at its most intense. The Sporades are less affected by the Meltemi than the Cyclades, but summer afternoon swells occur. Boat access to Lalaria and other northern beaches requires calm conditions. The main ferry connection is from Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the mainland (2-4 hours).
