Getting Around Greek Islands

Getting around Greek islands without a car. Accessible buses, water taxis, Athens metro, island transport options and practical mobility guidance for travelers with accessibility needs.

Athens Metro — Fully Accessible

Athens' metro system is one of the most accessible in Southern Europe. Line 3 (Blue) connects the airport directly to the city centre in 35 minutes, fully accessible. Line 1 (Green) connects to Piraeus ferry port. Tram Line 5 serves the southern coastal suburbs with low-floor accessible vehicles. Major interchange stations have lifts.

Island Bus Networks

KTEL bus networks on larger islands vary significantly in accessibility. Crete's north coast route (Heraklion to Chania) has modern low-floor accessible buses. Rhodes has two systems (East/West) with modern accessible buses on main routes. Corfu's town buses are newer and accessible. Kos is flat with regular bus service. Smaller Cycladic islands typically have a single older bus on the port-to-Chora route — taxis are easier for mobility users.

Taxis and Car-Free Islands

Taxis are often the most practical transport option for mobility users on Greek islands. Beat and inDrive apps work in Athens and larger islands. On smaller islands, ask your accommodation host for a trusted local taxi driver. Car-free islands (Hydra, Spetses, Halki) use donkeys, water taxis, and horse-drawn carriages — beautiful but challenging for wheelchair users. Hydra in particular is not suitable for wheelchair users beyond the harbour area.

Planning your island transport in advance removes the most stressful element of traveling with mobility needs. Before arriving on any island, confirm with your accommodation how they recommend getting from the port to the hotel, whether accessible taxis need to be pre-booked, and what local transport options exist for day trips. A 10-minute email exchange before travel is worth far more than trying to arrange accessible transport on the quayside with a ferry loading around you.
