Skiathos vs Skopelos — Sporades Island Comparison
Skiathos or Skopelos? Teleporio compares beaches, Mamma Mia filming locations, nightlife, authenticity, and access. Two neighbouring Sporades islands compared.
Skiathos and Skopelos are neighbouring Sporades islands — only 45 minutes apart by ferry. Skiathos is the famous one (airport, nightlife, 60+ beaches); Skopelos is the beautiful one (the Mamma Mia island, pine-forest scenery, plum orchards). Both are excellent but very different.
Choose Skiathos if…
Beach lovers (best in northern Greece); Nightlife seekers; Those arriving by air from Athens; Families wanting maximum beach options
Choose Skopelos if…
Mamma Mia fans (filming locations); Hikers and nature lovers (pine forests); Those wanting authentic Sporades village life; Foodies (plum products, local cuisine)
A practical side-by-side comparison
Beaches
Skiathos: Koukounaries (the finest sand beach in northern Greece), Lalaria (white pebbles, dramatic rock arch, accessible only by boat). Outstanding.
Skopelos: Stafylos and Limnonari are lovely but smaller. Not in the Skiathos league for beach quantity and variety.
Nightlife
Skiathos: The main tourist strip in Skiathos Town is one of the most lively in the Sporades. Busy bar scene.
Skopelos: Good bars in Skopelos Town and Glossa but this is not a nightlife island.
Scenery & filming
Skiathos: Beautiful pine forest scenery and airport runway over the beach (spectacular views of landing aircraft).
Skopelos: Mamma Mia was filmed here (2008 and 2018) — the Agios Ioannis chapel atop 365 steps is one of Greece's iconic images. Deeply beautiful.
Authenticity
Skiathos: Heavily touristic in town — British influence is strong on Skiathos.
Skopelos: Skopelos town and Glossa village feel more genuinely Greek — the plum heritage, the local architecture, the festivals.
Access
Skiathos: Airport (JSI) — flights from Athens 40 minutes. The most easily reached Sporade.
Skopelos: No airport — ferry only. Via Skiathos (45min) or direct from Volos (2.5h).
Food
Skiathos: Good fish restaurants and tourist-standard Greek food.
Skopelos: The plum orchards of Glossa village produce prunes famous throughout Greece. Good local food with the prune pastry (amygdalota).
Best months to compare
Skiathos: May, June, September; Skopelos: May, June, September, October
The travel decision
