The Sporades — Greece's Greenest Islands

The Sporades — Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros — are unusual among Greek island groups: they are forested, relatively green, and sit in a sheltered corner of the north Aegean between the mainland coast and the open sea. The main ferry hub is Volos on the mainland, with additional connections from Agios Konstantinos and Thessaloniki. Skiathos also has its own airport with direct European connections, making it the most accessible island in the group.

Skiathos — Beaches and Atmosphere

Skiathos has over 60 beaches, accessible by a continuous water-taxi service running around the south coast. Koukounaries, one of the finest sandy beaches in the Aegean, sits at the west end of the island — exposed to the southwest but sheltered from the prevailing summer winds. The Old Town is small, atmospheric, and walkable in an evening. Skiathos in July and August is busy; the airport is close to the main beach, and large aircraft pass remarkably close overhead on landing — a spectacle that has become a visitor attraction in its own right.

Skopelos — The Film Location

Skopelos is less developed than Skiathos — quieter, greener, and the island used as the primary filming location for Mamma Mia! (2008). The church of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri, perched on a rock at the northern tip of the island, is the wedding chapel from the film and now receives substantial visitor attention. The main town (Chora) cascades down the hillside above the ferry port in a way that is photogenic in all conditions. Skopelos is best reached via Skiathos by local ferry — the connection takes under an hour.

Alonissos — The Wildlife Island

Alonissos is the quietest and least developed of the accessible Sporades — the centrepiece of Greece's only National Marine Park, home to the largest population of Mediterranean monk seals in Europe. The old village (Hora) was damaged in a 1965 earthquake and rebuilt — it sits on a ridge above the new port with views across the marine park. Boat trips through the marine park offer the best chance of seal sightings, dolphin encounters, and access to uninhabited islets with extraordinary clear-water anchorages. The ferry connection from Volos runs through Skiathos and Skopelos, taking approximately four hours total.
