Why Paros Is Worth Understanding
Paros sits at the centre of the Cyclades network — geographically and logistically. From Paros, you can reach almost every significant island in the group: Naxos in 35 minutes, Mykonos in 1.5 hours, Ios in 2 hours, Santorini in 2.5-3 hours, Folegandros in 2.5 hours. This connectivity makes Paros the ideal staging point for a multi-island Cyclades circuit, and experienced island-hoppers use it as the hub of their itinerary rather than treating it merely as a destination. The island has its own ferry connections directly from Piraeus, and Paros Airport (PAS) receives summer seasonal flights from Athens and direct European charters.
Beyond its logistical role, Paros has genuine character. The capital Parikia is a proper Cycladic town — the labyrinthine old quarter with the Ekatontapiliani church (one of the finest early Christian basilicas in Greece, dating to the fourth century and still in active liturgical use) at its heart. Naoussa, the fishing village on the north coast, has become one of the most fashionable addresses in the Cyclades while retaining enough of its fishing-village structure to feel authentic. The island's marble — Parian marble, used for the Venus de Milo and the Hermes of Praxiteles — was the finest fine-grained marble in the ancient Mediterranean world.
History and Heritage
Paros was a major Cycladic cultural centre in antiquity, famous for its marble quarries (still visible at Marathi in the island's interior), its wine, and its pottery. The poet Archilochus (seventh century BC) — one of the most important Greek lyric poets, inventor of the iambic metre — was born on Paros. The Parian Chronicle, a marble stele that recorded major events in Greek history from 1582 to 263 BC, was found on Paros and is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The Byzantine church of Ekatontapiliani (Church of the Hundred Doors) dates to the reign of Constantine the Great and is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in Christendom. Venetian and then Ottoman rule followed the Byzantine period.
What Paros Is Famous For
- Parian marble — finest white marble in the ancient world, still quarried
- Ekatontapiliani — fourth-century Byzantine church in Parikia
- Naoussa — fashionable north coast fishing village
- Central Cyclades ferry hub — connections to all major Cyclades islands
- Golden beach (Chrysi Akti) — windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions
- Paros Park — protected natural area on the north peninsula
Local Specialities
Fresh fish from Naoussa harbour — the waterfront restaurants serve the morning catch daily. Local goat and sheep cheeses. Paros wine — the island has a long winemaking tradition, though production is smaller than in antiquity. Loukoumades (honey doughnuts) from the old market in Parikia. The food scene in Naoussa is particularly sophisticated — several restaurants using local produce at a level unusual for an island of this size.
Best Time to Visit
Paros is best in May-June and September-October. July-August is very busy and the Meltemi creates rough conditions on some inter-island crossings from Paros. The island is excellent as a base in shoulder season — most ferry connections run, accommodation is available without peak-season booking pressure, and the main sites are uncrowded. Winter on Paros is quiet but functional — the island is inhabited year-round and most services operate.
