Arriving at Mykonos — New Port and Old Port

Mykonos has two ports: the New Port (Tourlos, 2km north of town), used by large overnight ferries and high-speed catamarans, and the Old Port (in Mykonos Town centre), used by smaller vessels and water taxis from Delos. Arriving at the New Port in summer requires some forward planning for onward transport — taxis are scarce immediately after a large ferry docks, and the 15-minute walk to town along the port road is possible with light luggage.

Getting Around Mykonos

Mykonos Town (Chora) is navigable only on foot — the maze of narrow lanes is the island's defining feature and one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades. For beaches, buses run from the south bus station (near the old port) to Paradise, Super Paradise, Platis Gialos, Psarou, and Ornos. A private boat or water taxi is the best way to reach the southern beaches in high season when road traffic is congested. Scooters and ATVs are widely available for rent.

The Character of Mykonos

Mykonos has developed over the past 40 years into one of the most internationally recognised luxury and nightlife destinations in Europe. The original Cycladic fishing village character is still visible in the maze of lanes, the pelican mascot, and the windmills on the hill above Little Venice — but coexists with international fashion brands, beach clubs charging €1,000+ for sun beds, and summer yacht traffic. The island suits travellers who want this combination; it suits less well those who want a quieter Cycladic experience.

Beaufort and Sea Conditions

Mykonos is in the northern Cyclades, where northerly winds can affect local sea conditions. Conditions at the New Port and on the Santorini crossing vary by route and date. Compare departures with the current forecast, vessel details and operator notice rather than treating a time of day as a guide to operation.

What to See on Mykonos

Beyond the beach clubs, Mykonos Town is one of the most beautiful Cycladic villages in Greece — the maze of lanes, Little Venice (houses built directly over the sea on the south side of town), the windmills on the hill above, and the white cubic churches are genuinely beautiful at dawn and dusk when day-trip crowds have thinned. The island of Delos, a 30-minute boat trip from the Old Port, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the ancient Greek world — birthplace of Apollo and Artemis and once the religious and commercial centre of the Aegean. The day trip to Delos is strongly recommended for any visitor spending more than one night on Mykonos.
