The beaches of Ios are among the finest in the Cyclades. Mylopotas, a long arc of sand on the south bay, is one of the largest and most impressive beaches in the island group. Manganari, accessible only by boat or a long rough road on the south coast, is quieter and pristine. The island was ruled by the Duchy of the Archipelago under the Venetians from the thirteenth century and came under Ottoman control in 1537. Ios remained relatively undeveloped until the 1970s, when its combination of fine beaches and cheap accommodation attracted the first wave of backpackers that established its party reputation. That reputation has persisted while the island has simultaneously developed a broader appeal.

July-August for the full Ios experience — understand that the Chora is genuinely noisy in peak season. Ios is on the main Piraeus-Santorini route, making connections easy: Piraeus (4-5 hours), Naxos (1-1.5 hours), Santorini (45 minutes-1 hour). The Meltemi creates rough conditions on the open Cyclades crossings in July-August — morning departures are essential.
