Astypalea
Astypalea travel guide — the butterfly-shaped Dodecanese island. Ferry from Piraeus, iconic kastro village, remote beaches, and the most untouched island…
Teleporio™ travel intelligence
Astypalea is the most isolated island in the Dodecanese — shaped like a butterfly and perched halfway between the Cyclades and Dodecanese. Its kastro village is among the most dramatic in Greece: a Venetian fortress with whitewashed chapels cascading down a clifftop above two connected bays.
What to know about Astypalea
- Kastro village — Venetian fortress, cliff-top churches
- Livadia bay and beach
- Steno — the narrow isthmus between the two wings of the island
- Vatses and Kaminakia remote beaches
- Analipsi (Maltezana) and old Roman mosaics
- Boat trips to uninhabited islets

Faith and heritage: The kastro houses over 20 tiny whitewashed chapels, many still in active use. The church of Agios Ioannis at the cliff edge is one of the most photographed in the Dodecanese.
Traveling with pets: Very limited vet access (one in summer). Remote and logistically challenging for pets with health needs. Extraordinary walking for fit dogs.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Astypalea called the butterfly island?
Astypalea's distinctive shape — two wings connected by a narrow isthmus — resembles a butterfly when seen from above. The narrow land bridge (Steno) is so thin you can see the sea from both sides.
