Leonidio — A Climbing Mecca and the Tsitsibira Aubergine

Leonidio is a small town of approximately 3,500 residents on the Arcadian coast of the eastern Peloponnese, tucked into the Dafnon Gorge where the Dafnon River reaches the sea. It is known outside Greece almost exclusively for two things: the Leonidio climbing crags (internationally rated alongside Kalymnos as among the best sport climbing destinations in the Mediterranean), and the Tsitsibira aubergine — a small, intensely flavoured local variety unique to the Leonidio basin, grown exclusively on the alluvial soils of the valley, and the subject of an annual August festival.

The climbing at Leonidio is concentrated on three main crags in the gorge walls above and around the town: Kyriakos, Kastania, and the Polymnia sector. The rock is red and orange limestone — a different geological character from the grey Kalymnos limestone — and the climbing character reflects this: steeper, more pocketed, with a different movement style to the tufa climbing that defines Kalymnos. It is significantly smaller, more intensely flavoured, and with fewer seeds than the standard varieties; the stuffed version (imam bayildi) made with Tsitsibira has a distinct sweetness and texture that makes it a genuinely different dish from the common restaurant preparation.
