Teleporio™ travel intelligence

Ioannina is the most distinctive mainland city in Greece — an Ottoman lake city with an island fortress on Lake Pamvotis, the legacy of Ali Pasha (the Lion of Ioannina), and the gateway to the Zagori stone villages and Vikos Gorge, one of the world's deepest canyons. A world apart from the island Greece most visitors see.

Planning your visit

Ferry planning note: By car from Athens: 4.5 hours via the Egnatia Odos motorway. Direct bus from Athens (5.5 hours). Ioannina Airport (IOA) has direct Athens flights.

Best months: April, May, September, October

Peak season: July and August

Sea and wind conditions: Not a sea destination. Ioannina has a distinct four-season climate — cooler than coastal Greece in summer, cold winters.

Local food: Ioannina is famous for its silver craftsmanship and its food — try katsikaki (roast kid goat), bougatsa (custard pastry, made differently here than Thessaloniki), and baklava from the Ottoman pastry tradition. Lake fish from Pamvotis when in season.

Faith and heritage: The island monastery of Agios Nikolaos at the centre of Lake Pamvotis is where Ali Pasha was killed by Ottoman agents in 1822 — his assassination room is preserved. The Zagori villages have extraordinary Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches.

Traveling with pets: Vet access in Ioannina city. Zagori walking routes are superb for dogs — cobbled kalderimia (paved mule paths) through forest and stone villages. Lake promenade is dog-friendly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Zagori region?

Zagori is a region of 46 stone villages in the mountains northwest of Ioannina, connected by Ottoman-era cobbled paths (kalderimia) and triple-arched stone bridges. The Vikos Gorge runs through its heart. It's one of the most unspoiled landscapes in Europe.
