Teleporio™ travel intelligence
Delphi was the centre of the ancient Greek world — the sanctuary of Apollo and site of the Oracle, the most important religious and political institution of antiquity. Set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus with a view over the olive groves of the Pleistos valley to the Gulf of Corinth, it is also one of the most dramatically beautiful archaeological sites in Greece.

Planning your visit
Ferry planning note: By car from Athens: 2.5 hours via the Athens–Lamia motorway and the Itea road. Regular KTEL bus service from Athens Liosion terminal (3 hours). Stay overnight in Delphi village or nearby Arachova.
Best months: April, May, June, September, October
Peak season: July and August
Sea and wind conditions: Not a sea destination. Delphi is at altitude (550m) — cooler than the coast in summer. Arachova is a skiing destination in winter.
Local food: Arachova (10km from Delphi) has excellent traditional mountain food — lamb on the spit, formaela cheese, local wine, and tsipouro. Delphi village itself has tavernas with terrace views over the valley.
Faith and heritage: Delphi was the sacred centre of the ancient Greek world — the omphalos (navel stone) marked the point where two eagles sent by Zeus from the ends of the earth met. The Oracle of Apollo at Delphi was consulted by city-states and kings throughout the ancient world for 800 years.
Traveling with pets: Archaeological site access may restrict dogs. The olive grove below the site (the path down to Itea) is extraordinary for dogs — 12km of ancient terraced walkways through the world's largest olive forest.
