Athens Has Three Ferry Ports

Most guides to Greek ferry travel focus entirely on Piraeus — the largest port in Greece and the main gateway to the islands. But Athens is served by three ferry departure points: Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio. Each serves different destinations and different route operators. The critical rule before booking any airport-to-port transport: always confirm your ferry's departure port from your ticket or booking confirmation before purchasing land transport. Assuming everything leaves from Piraeus is the most common logistics error in Athens, and correcting it mid-journey can be extremely stressful.

Piraeus — The Main Gateway

Piraeus handles the vast majority of Greek island ferries and is the departure point for routes to all major island groups: Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, Saronic Gulf, Ionian, and North Aegean. The port has twelve passenger gate areas (E1 through E12) spread across a large waterfront, making navigation essential before you arrive. From Athens Airport, the easiest route to Piraeus is the Metro Line 1 (Green Line) via Monastiraki or Syntagma, taking approximately 40 to 50 minutes once you change lines. The X80 express bus runs direct from the airport to Piraeus in approximately 60 to 75 minutes. Allow at least 90 minutes from the airport to be comfortable, more in peak season.

Rafina — Another Athens Ferry Port

Rafina is an eastern Attica port used for services to several northern Cyclades destinations. Ground-transfer options and sailing times depend on your travel date and selected service. Lavrio — The Third Option

Lavrio is a smaller port on the southern tip of Attica, serving selected Cyclades routes. Destinations and operators vary by season, so verify the current sailing from your ticket and operator timetable. Compare airport transfer options and allow time for the journey to the port.

Timing Airport-to-Port Connections

The standard same-day pattern that works reliably is an international flight arriving Athens before noon with a ferry departure at 19:00 or later, giving roughly 6 to 7 hours of actual margin. A 30-minute inbound flight delay on a 17:00 arrival with a 20:00 ferry departure compresses the margin significantly. An overnight in Athens before a morning ferry departure removes the risk entirely and is strongly recommended when the international arrival is in the afternoon. For travelers with an early morning ferry on the day after arrival, staying near Piraeus (particularly the Faliro or Kastela areas) removes the morning transit problem.
