The Parnassos Ski Centre is the biggest ski resort in Greece, spread across two sectors — Fterolakka and Kelaria — on Mount Parnassos. With 17 lifts (13 main + 4 beginner lifts) confirmed by the official site, it is the benchmark Greek ski experience, combining real alpine scale with the cultural weight of being above Delphi and the legendary village of Arachova.

The resort sits approximately 2.5 hours from Athens — close enough for a weekend trip from the capital, which means weekends in season are busy. Midweek visits are quieter and recommended. The Kelaria sector reaches to 2,260 m and holds snow better into spring; Fterolakka is lower and more suited to beginners and families.

Arachova

Arachova, 8 km below the ski centre, is one of the best mountain resort villages in Greece — lively, atmospheric, and genuinely beautiful in winter. Tavernas serving local cheese and wine, stone-paved lanes, and an après-ski scene that continues well past midnight make it a destination in its own right. The UNESCO archaeological site of Delphi is a further 14 km down the mountain.

Getting There

Drive from Athens via the E75/A1 motorway toward Lamia, then west via Livadeia. The mountain road from Arachova requires snow tyres or chains in heavy snow. KTEL buses serve Arachova from Athens; a taxi is needed for the final stretch to the lifts. Nearest airport: Athens International (ATH), approximately 2.5 hours.

The Ski Season at Parnassos

Parnassos typically opens in late December and runs through March, depending on snowfall. The two sectors — Kelaria and Fterolakka — have different characteristics: Kelaria reaches higher and holds snow better into spring, while Fterolakka has more beginner runs and is lower. Lift tickets are purchased at the resort; there is no advance online booking system for day tickets. Ski school lessons in English are available at both sectors. The Arachova access road requires snow tyres or chains in heavy snow conditions — the resort management posts road conditions on its website and social media before busy weekends.

The Parnassos massif is part of the Mount Parnassos National Park, established in 1938. The park extends below and around the ski area and is home to wolves and brown bears — wildlife not typically seen by day visitors to the ski slopes but documented by the park authority. The Corycian Cave — a natural cave above the treeline sacred to Pan and the Nymphs in antiquity, used by the Delphic oracle's followers for rituals — is accessible in summer via a marked trail from the Arachova area.

The Parnassos resort operates Europe's highest-altitude McDonald's restaurant at the Kelaria base, which has been one of the resort's unofficial landmarks since the 1990s. A more atmospheric option: the village tavernas in Arachova, 8 km below, serve traditional mountain food (kokoras krasatos, tiganites, local cheeses, mountain greens) in stone-walled rooms that have been open since before the ski centre existed.
