Kalavrita Ski Resort — Peloponnese Skiing on Mt. Chelmos

The Kalavrita Ski Resort on Mount Chelmos (Helmos) is the only major ski resort in the Peloponnese, reaching to 2,340 m — the elevation confirmed by the Greek National Tourism Organisation. In 2026 it hosted a Freeride World Tour (FWT) Qualifier, demonstrating that beyond its reputation as a family-friendly resort, the mountain has genuinely serious terrain for advanced skiers.

The resort is reachable from Athens via one of the most extraordinary approaches of any ski destination in Europe: the Odontotos rack-and-pinion railway, which climbs through the dramatic Vouraikos Gorge from Diakofto on the Corinthian coast. The 45-minute journey on this 19th-century mountain railway is a destination experience in itself — one of the great train rides in Greece.

The Wider Kalavrita Region

Kalavrita town carries a powerful and sobering history — the site of one of the most significant World War II atrocities in Greece, commemorated by the War Museum and the stopped church clock. The Monastery of Agia Lavra, 6 km from Kalavrita, is where the Greek War of Independence is traditionally considered to have begun in 1821. Skiing here carries a different cultural weight than Parnassos.

Getting There

Drive from Athens via the E65 motorway toward Patras, then south toward Diakofto and Kalavrita. Or take the mainline train to Diakofto and then the Odontotos rack railway up to Kalavrita. Nearest airport: Athens International (ATH), approximately 2.5–3 hours.

Ski Terrain and Conditions

The Kalavrita resort has a summit of 2,340 m and base at approximately 1,750 m, with a vertical drop of approximately 590 m — the largest in the Peloponnese and comparable to mid-range Alpine resorts. The 2026 Freeride World Tour qualifier confirms that at least part of the terrain is genuinely technical. The resort has 7 lifts covering groomed and ungroomed terrain. Snow conditions and lift status are published at kalavryta-ski.gr. The Vouraikos Gorge below the resort, traversed by the Odontotos railway, is also a hiking and climbing destination in other seasons.

Kalavrita town is deeply worth an extra day beyond the skiing. The War Museum of Kalavrita documents the December 1943 massacre when German forces killed almost all the male inhabitants of the town over age 15 — one of the worst recorded Nazi reprisals in occupied Greece. The clock on the tower of the Assumption church is permanently stopped at 2:34 PM, the time of the atrocity. The nearby Monastery of Agia Lavra houses the flag under which Germanos of Patras allegedly blessed the independence uprising of 1821.

The Kalavrita ski centre offers ski rental, ski school, and a restaurant at the base station. The access road from Kalavrita town takes approximately 20 minutes in normal conditions and requires chains or snow tyres when fresh snow is falling.
