Falakro Ski Centre — Eastern Macedonia's Mountain Resort

The Falakro Ski Centre on Mount Falakro in the Drama prefecture is the easternmost ski resort in Greece — a fact that also makes it among the least visited by international travellers, and among the most rewarding for those who seek uncrowded skiing. Set in the rarely-visited mountains of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, it offers skiing in genuine peace alongside day-trip access to ancient Philippi and the Aegean city of Kavala.

The ancient site of Philippi — where the Roman Empire's future was decided in 42 BC when Octavian (later Augustus) and Mark Antony defeated Brutus and Cassius — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site 15 km from Drama. It is one of the most historically significant ancient sites in Greece, and almost no international tourists visit it. Combining a ski day at Falakro with Philippi and the Byzantine waterfront of Kavala creates an itinerary with no precedent in any ski brochure.

Getting There

Drive from Kavala International Airport (KVA) via Drama toward the mountain — approximately 1.5 hours. From Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), drive east on the Egnatia Odos — approximately 2 hours.

Falakro — Eastern Macedonia's Hidden Resort

Mount Falakro rises to 2,109 m and the ski centre operates between 1,720 and 1,960 m — relatively compact but with good snow conditions due to the mountain's position in the humid northeastern Aegean climate zone. Drama town (15 km from the resort) is the natural base: a pleasant mid-sized city with a good restaurant scene, Bairami square dating from Ottoman times, and a microbrewery culture that has developed unusually strongly here. Drama's Dramali spring water — famous across Greece — is produced in the area.

The Philippoi archaeological park at ancient Philippi is a 15-minute drive east of Drama toward Kavala. The site preserves the battlefield of the 42 BC confrontation that determined whether Rome would become a republic or an empire, alongside significant early Christian remains including the cell where Saint Paul was briefly imprisoned (Acts 16), two large basilicas, a theatre, and the forum. UNESCO World Heritage Site status was granted in 2016. Kavala, the Aegean port city 20 km from Philippi, has an extraordinary Imaret complex (the largest surviving Ottoman social welfare building in the Balkans, now a luxury hotel) and a Byzantine castle above a fishing harbour with views to Thassos island.

Falakro's summit area above 2,000 m receives significantly more snow than the lower Macedonian valleys, with the northeastern aspect holding powder conditions after dumps that melt quickly on south-facing slopes elsewhere. The resort's 12 lifts cover both beginner and intermediate terrain, with the upper runs providing the most reliable snow conditions. The resort operates at ski-local scale without international resort infrastructure — this is a feature for visitors who want authentic Greek mountain experience rather than a limitation. Drama city's hotel and restaurant infrastructure serves as the practical base.
