Getting There

Drive south from Thessaloniki on the E75 motorway toward Katerini, then west into the Pierian Mountains via Elatochori village. Approximately 1.5 hours from Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport (SKG). Athens International (ATH) is approximately 4 hours south.

The Pierian Mountains where Elatochori operates are the western foothills of the Olympus massif — geologically and ecologically continuous with Mount Olympus National Park. The park's wildlife — golden eagle, chamois, red deer, wolf — ranges through the forest at lower elevations. Litochoro, the gateway town to Mount Olympus, is 30 km east and provides access to summer hiking routes on the mountain. In winter, the Enipeas gorge walk from Litochoro to the Prionia trailhead (passable in mild conditions without crampons) is an excellent half-day mountain experience alongside a ski day at Elatochori.

The resort's 5 lifts serve a mix of beginner-friendly blue runs and more challenging reds, with the upper slopes offering genuine intermediate challenge. Elatochori village itself (1,100 m elevation) has several guesthouses and tavernas that cater to ski visitors, with stone-built architecture typical of Pierian mountain settlement. Katerini, the nearest city (30 km east on the plain), has standard urban services and accommodation if village-level options are not available. Thessaloniki's direct access via the E75 motorway south to Katerini makes Elatochori one of the most time-efficient ski options from Greece's second city.

The Elatochori resort is managed by the Pierikos Skiing and Mountaineering Association, a local sports body that maintains the infrastructure at a community scale rather than corporate resort scale. Lift tickets are reasonably priced compared to European Alpine equivalents; ski school lessons are available in Greek and English. The Pierian Mountains above Elatochori are also summer hiking terrain: the association maintains marked trails to the summit plateaus above the resort, with views across the Olympus massif and south to the Thessalian plain.
