The Athens (Piraeus) to Ithaca Crossing
Blue Star Ferries and Strintzis Lines overnight car ferries from Piraeus via Patras to Piso Aetos (Ithaca's west coast port) and sometimes Vathi (east coast main harbour); the Ionian chain route calls at Kefalonia (Sami) before reaching Ithaca; most visitors prefer the practical bus+ferry via Patras or the fly-Kefalonia-then-ferry-to-Ithaca approach
The crossing takes 9–14 hours overnight from Piraeus via Patras; or 5–6 hours via bus to Patras then ferry via Kefalonia to Ithaca. several weekly on Blue Star overnight services; the via-Patras combination offers more practical frequency
Sea Conditions and Beaufort Exposure
the Ionian Sea is significantly calmer than the Aegean — one of Greece's most reliable ferry regions; the Meltemi does not affect this route; exceptional winter storms are the only disruption risk; the Kefalonia–Ithaca channel is particularly sheltered
Booking and Tickets
the most practical itinerary from Athens: fly to Kefalonia Airport (EFL, 45 minutes), spend a day on Kefalonia, then take the local car ferry from Piso Aetos (Kefalonia east coast) to Ithaca, approximately 45 minutes; alternatively, KTEL bus Athens to Patras (2.5 hours) then Patras-Sami ferry (2.5 hours) then Sami-Ithaca ferry (45 minutes)
Arrival
Vathi harbour (the capital) is the most beautiful arrival on Ithaca — a perfect horseshoe bay described by Homer as the finest harbour in the world; if arriving at Piso Aetos (the ferry port on the west coast), Vathi is 10 km east by road; taxi or pre-arranged transfer is recommended as local bus service is infrequent
