The Kymi to Skyros Crossing
Skyros Shipping Co. (Lykomides Ferries) conventional car ferry from Kymi port (east coast of Euboea island) to Linaria (Skyros's main port on the sheltered west coast); the only regular ferry connection to Skyros, which lies east of the main Sporades chain in the northern Aegean
The crossing takes approximately 2 hours. 1–2 departures daily in summer; 1 daily or less in winter; Skyros is genuinely isolated and schedules should be confirmed before travel
Sea Conditions and Beaufort Exposure
the crossing from Kymi to Skyros passes the open northern Aegean between Euboea and the island — medium to high Beaufort exposure depending on conditions; northern Aegean gales can disrupt service for 24–48 hours; building a buffer day into any Skyros itinerary is strongly recommended
Skyros is accessible year-round by ferry but the service is minimal in winter; the famous Skyros Carnival (Apokries, February–March) is one of Greece's most extraordinary folk festivals — book accommodation and ferries well in advance for the Carnival period
Booking and Tickets
tickets available at Kymi port or from the ferry operator website; Kymi port is reached from Athens by KTEL Eviasbus from Liossion terminal (2.5–3 hours); Skyros Airport (SKU) has twice-weekly Sky Express connections to Athens if the ferry is disrupted
Arrival
Linaria port is a small sheltered harbour on Skyros's west side — the main Chora village is 10 km away by road; local bus meets most ferries; the dramatically situated Chora with its kastro (Byzantine/Venetian castle) is the island's main settlement
