Crete — Greece's Largest Island and What Conditions Mean Here

Crete is large enough to have its own micro-climates: the north coast (Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno) faces the Aegean and receives the Meltemi from the north; the south coast faces the Libyan Sea, is sheltered from the Meltemi, and is significantly warmer. This distinction matters practically: on a Beaufort 5 day when the north coast beaches are rough and windswept, the south coast villages of Matala, Plakias, and Paleochora may be calm. Planning around this geography is one of the most useful tools for a Crete traveller on a variable-condition day.

Heraklion — The Hub

Heraklion is Crete's capital and main transport hub — the island's busiest airport (direct flights from across Europe), the main ferry port serving overnight connections from Piraeus (9 hours), and the base for the Knossos archaeological site. Knossos, 5 kilometres south of the city, is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Greece and is fully exposed. Visit before 10:00 to combine comfortable temperature with thinner crowds; the site becomes very hot and crowded by midday in summer. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum, holding the finest Minoan collection in the world, is an excellent midday alternative.

Chania — The Most Beautiful City in Crete

Chania's Venetian harbour, with its lighthouse, covered market, and neoclassical mansions, is consistently ranked among the most beautiful urban spaces in Greece. The old town is dense, walkable, and largely covered — excellent in all weather conditions. The Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest gorges at 18 kilometres, begins above the Omalos plateau and descends to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli. Gorge entry requires an early start (7:00 AM from Chania) and typically 5–6 hours to complete. Check conditions before attempting the gorge in extreme heat or after rain.

Beach Conditions by Wind Direction

North coast beaches (Elafonisi, Balos, Falasarna) face west and northwest — sheltered from the Meltemi on most days but exposed to westerly swells. Elafonisi, known for its pink sand and shallow lagoon, is best in morning conditions before any afternoon wind builds. Balos, accessible by boat from Kissamos or by a rough road, is similarly morning-optimised. The south coast beaches (Preveli, Matala, Triopetra) are sheltered from the Meltemi and often calm when the north coast is rough — a reliable alternative on Beaufort 5+ days.
