Why Greece Uses the Beaufort Scale

The Beaufort scale is a numerical measure of wind speed running from 0 (dead calm) to 12 (hurricane force). Developed by British Admiral Francis Beaufort in 1805, it remains in active use by meteorological services worldwide — including the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), which publishes Beaufort-based marine forecasts for all Greek sea areas. Greek ferry operators, port authorities, and local fishermen all communicate wind in Beaufort force. How Wind Affects Your Ferry Crossing

Beaufort 0 through 4 means calm to moderate conditions — comfortable crossings on all vessel types. Beaufort 5 is worth watching on catamaran routes: some operators begin delaying or cancelling high-speed services on exposed open-sea crossings. Beaufort 6 is the significant threshold: most high-speed catamarans cancel on exposed Cyclades routes, while large conventional ferries continue with possible delay. Beaufort 7 brings widespread disruption across the Aegean, affecting both fast and conventional services on exposed routes. Beaufort 8 and above means port authorities may suspend operations entirely on affected sea areas. These thresholds apply to the open Aegean; sheltered routes in the Saronic Gulf or along the Turkish-facing Dodecanese coast are less affected.

The Meltemi: Greece's Defining Summer Wind

The Meltemi is a seasonal northerly wind that sweeps the central Aegean from roughly late June through early September. It is dry, strong, and persistent — often blowing for three to five consecutive days at Beaufort 5 to 7. The Meltemi does not come with rain or thunderstorms; the skies are typically clear blue while the wind howls. This makes it easy to underestimate. A Meltemi event at Beaufort 6 or 7 will cancel most catamaran services on Cyclades routes for the duration. Travelers who build itineraries with day-by-day ferry connections in July or August without wind buffers routinely encounter delays that cascade into missed subsequent bookings.

Which Greek Sea Areas Are Most Exposed

The open Cyclades — particularly routes crossing the central Aegean between Santorini, Mykonos, Milos, and Folegandros — are the most Meltemi-exposed part of the network. The northern and eastern Cyclades (Naxos, Paros, Syros) are more sheltered by surrounding islands. The Dodecanese routes running along the Turkish coast are generally well protected. The Saronic Gulf, connecting Athens to Hydra, Aegina, and Spetses, is the most sheltered and most reliable ferry area in Greece. Practical habit: check the Hellenic National Meteorological Service marine forecast the evening before any Aegean crossing. Beaufort 5 is worth noting. Beaufort 6 on a catamaran route means having a backup plan.
