The Santorini Experience is a multi-sport event that takes full advantage of one of the world's most unusual landscapes. The open water swim happens inside the caldera of an active submarine volcano. The mountain running discipline goes across the volcanic rim — raw terrain that looks and feels unlike any other race environment in Europe. The road cycling takes place on the island's clifftop roads, with views across the Aegean to Folegandros and Ios.

Santorini's geology is the product of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history — the Minoan eruption of approximately 1600 BC, which may have contributed to the decline of the Bronze Age Minoan civilisation. Racing across this terrain carries a geological weight that is difficult to articulate to someone who has not been here.
