Poseidon Athens Half Marathon — Fast and Flat by the Saronic Gulf

The Poseidon Athens Half Marathon on 25 April 2027 runs along the Faliro coastal waterfront — the sea-level promenade that connects Faliro Bay to the southern Athens coast, with the Saronic Gulf visible for the full course. Named for the god of the sea, whose temple at Cape Sounion (70 km south of Athens) is one of the most iconic landmarks in Greece, the race offers a fast, flat profile — road surface, no significant elevation — making it one of the most favourable half marathon courses in Greece for those chasing a time. Companion 5 km race on the same weekend.

Late April is Athens at its finest. The Acropolis is open from dawn; the National Archaeological Museum (the largest collection of ancient Greek artefacts in the world) is uncrowded; the Plaka neighbourhood tavernas are busy without the crushing summer heat. Temperatures are typically 20–25°C — warm enough to run in minimal kit without being a heat event.

Getting There and Training

Athens International Airport (ATH) has Metro Line 3 direct to Syntagma Square in approximately 40 minutes. The tram connects central Athens to the Faliro waterfront. The Faliro coastal promenade is the race course — arriving a day early to walk or run the route is both a useful taper activity and a genuinely enjoyable way to orient to the city.

Athens in Late April

Late April is one of the two optimal Athens windows (the other is October). The Acropolis is open from 8:00 and gets fewer visitors before 10:00 than at any point in July or August. The Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike are accessible at a human pace. The National Archaeological Museum — housing 11,000 objects and the finest collection of ancient Greek artefacts in the world — is comfortably accessible without the summer crush. The neighbourhood of Monastiraki, the Central Market (Varvakios), and the Psiri district are all within walking distance of the Syntagma hotel district.

The Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) — the 1896 Olympic Games venue and the only all-marble stadium in the world — is 15 minutes on foot from the Acropolis and worth a visit for the scale and the museum. The stadium's track is open for running on non-event days. The Cape Sounion day trip — the Temple of Poseidon on a headland above the Aegean, 70 km south of Athens — is a standard half-day excursion that rewards any visiting runner with a thematic connection between the race, the god, and the landscape. The drive via the coastal road through Lagonisi and Lavrio passes some of the best coastal scenery accessible from Athens.
