Patmos Easter — Holy Week at the Monastery of the Apocalypse

Patmos Easter is considered by many Orthodox Christians to be the most sacred Easter celebration in Greece. Patmos is the island where Saint John the Theologian wrote the Book of Revelation in a cave above the port of Skala, and where the UNESCO-listed Monastery of Saint John the Theologian has stood since 1088. Holy Week culminates in the Resurrection service held at midnight on Holy Saturday at the monastery — celebrated with candlelit processions through the medieval Chora, the ringing of the monastery bells, and the Anastasi (Resurrection) service conducted by the monks in the ancient liturgical tradition.

Patmos has no airport. Check accommodation and ferry availability for Holy Week early if your dates are fixed. Kos and Rhodes have airports, but onward ferry routes, journey times and seasonal services vary; confirm current schedules and ticket details with the operators or booking provider. The Island of Patmos

Patmos is unlike any other island in the Dodecanese — small (34 km²), quiet, and shaped by its monastic identity in a way that has resisted the development pressures that transformed neighbouring Kos and Rhodes. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the hill above Chora (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, along with the Cave of the Apocalypse below it) has been continuously inhabited by monks since its founding in 1088. The monastery treasury — icons, manuscript codices, vestments, and reliquaries — contains one of the most important collections of Byzantine religious art accessible to the public in Greece.

The Chora above Skala port is a medieval village of whitewashed cubic houses clustered around the monastery walls — quiet, intact, and without the tourism commercialisation of better-known Cycladic choras. Several of the monastery's cells and the surrounding lanes are part of the UNESCO protected zone. The Cave of the Apocalypse, halfway between Skala and Chora, is where Saint John is said to have dictated the Book of Revelation to his disciple Prochoros — a crack in the cave ceiling is traditionally identified as the voice of God. The site is administered by the monastery and requires modest dress. Spring is the optimal season: wildflowers cover the hillsides, the Mediterranean light is exceptional, and the island is calm before the summer Dodecanese ferry traffic begins.

Ferries are an important way to reach Patmos. Blue Star Ferries runs Piraeus–Dodecanese services that may stop at Patmos; fast services from Kos and Rhodes depend on the season and timetable.
