Crete Half Marathon — October Racing Near Heraklion

The Crete Half Marathon on 4 October 2026 is held in Arkalochori — a town in the Heraklion prefecture of central Crete, approximately 25 minutes south of Heraklion by road. Alongside the half marathon (21.1 km), the event offers 10 km, 5 km, and 1 km children's races. The organiser is the Athletic Health Club. Heraklion and the Minoan Heritage

Heraklion is the fifth-largest city in Greece and one of the most historically layered. The Palace of Knossos — the largest and most complex Minoan archaeological site, occupied continuously from 7000 BC — is a 20-minute drive from the airport and a 10-minute drive from the city centre. Sir Arthur Evans's early-20th-century reconstruction of parts of the palace remains controversial among archaeologists but produces a vivid impression of Bronze Age scale. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum — completely renovated and one of the finest in Greece — houses the Phaistos Disc, the bull-leaping fresco, and hundreds of extraordinary Minoan artefacts in a purpose-built building in the city centre. October access is comfortable and unhurried.

The Venetian-era Koules fortress at Heraklion harbour and the 16th-century city walls (among the best preserved in the Mediterranean) are accessible without tickets or queues. The covered market on 1866 Street, the oldest covered market in Crete, is worth a morning for local cheese, wild herbs, honey, and raki. Arkalochori, the race start town, is approximately 25 km south of Heraklion in the Pediada region of central Crete. The drive takes about 30 minutes from Heraklion city. The Minoan Labyrinth at Gortys — actually Phaistos, 40 km southwest — is the second-largest Minoan palace after Knossos and significantly less visited; combining a post-race drive to Phaistos with the Minoan Museum in Heraklion creates the most complete Minoan cultural experience available.
