Corfu Easter Epitafios — Brass Bands, Chopin and Holy Saturday Pot-Throwing

Corfu's Easter celebrations are unique in Greece — shaped by four centuries of Venetian influence on this Ionian island. On Orthodox Good Friday, all the major church bands of Corfu Town accompany their parish Epitafios (decorated bier representing the shroud of Christ) through the streets simultaneously. At 11:00 on Holy Saturday, residents throughout Corfu Town throw large clay pots, jugs, and pitchers from their balconies onto the streets below. The sound of hundreds of pots smashing simultaneously fills the old town. The tradition is said to be connected to the Venetian custom of throwing out old possessions at New Year — repurposed in Corfu as a symbol of driving out evil and welcoming the Resurrection. Spectators gather in the streets and squares below, watching from a safe distance. The event is chaotic, loud, and genuinely extraordinary.

The Good Friday Epitafios processions begin in the early evening. Each of Corfu's principal churches has its own brass band, and all bands process simultaneously through the town, passing through each other's routes at intervals throughout the night. The entire old town remains open and full of people until past midnight. The following morning's pot-throwing requires an early start — the procession begins at 11:00 and the main square fills early. Corfu Town restaurants are fully open across Easter; booking a table for Holy Saturday evening or Easter Sunday lunch is strongly recommended.

The Holy Saturday pot-throwing (botides) begins at precisely 11:00 and lasts approximately 20 minutes. Position yourself in the Liston arcade or the Spianada square for the best view — the old town lanes around the Venetian buildings receive the most pot-throwing from high balconies.
