The Tourist Police — 1571

The Tourist Police line (1571) is a dedicated service for visitors to Greece. English-speaking officers handle lost passports, theft reports, travel disputes, and general assistance for tourists who encounter problems. It is separate from the general police emergency line (100) and often the most practical first call for a travel-related issue that is not a life-threatening emergency.

Greek Coast Guard — 108

The Coast Guard line (108) handles maritime emergencies, distress at sea, and incidents involving ferries or boats. If you witness a maritime incident or are on a vessel in distress, 108 connects directly to coast guard operations. Greek ferries are required by law to conduct safety briefings on departure — note the muster station location when boarding.

Practical Safety Guidance

Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is strongly recommended for island travel. Remote islands may have limited hospital facilities, and evacuation by helicopter or fast boat can take time and significant cost without coverage. In the event of a ferry cancellation due to weather (Beaufort 7+), passengers are legally entitled to a full refund. Keep your ticket as proof of purchase. For non-emergency medical situations on islands, ask your accommodation for the nearest health centre (kentro ygeias).
