Rhodes Diving — Kalithea Bay and the Dodecanese's Longest Dive Season

Rhodes has well-developed recreational diving infrastructure serving the largest tourist island in the Dodecanese. Kalithea Bay is documented on the PADI official dive site directory as a sheltered bay with clear Aegean water and varied reef life at multiple depths — the stand-out site on the island. Waterhoppers, with PADI-certified centres confirmed in the north of the island (Kritika) and at Lindos in the south, is the primary established operator with a published address and contact details. Rhodes benefits from one of Greece's longest dive seasons — April through November is typical, due to the island's southern latitude and warmer Dodecanese water. Water temperature reaches 28°C in summer. PADI beginner courses and Discover Scuba Diving experiences are widely available. Advanced sites on the island's walls and deeper zones are accessible for certified divers.

Getting to Rhodes

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (RHO) is one of Greece's busiest, with direct low-cost and charter flights from major European cities throughout the season. Regular ferry connections from Piraeus (Athens) — approximately 14–18 hours overnight. Local ferries from Kos, Kalymnos, and other Dodecanese islands. Book via Ferryhopper.

Diving for Non-Divers and First-Timers

Rhodes has a particularly strong infrastructure for beginners. The Discover Scuba Diving experience — a pool introduction followed by a shallow sea dive — is available at multiple centres around the island and is the standard entry point for holidaymakers who have never dived. Kalithea Bay, with its sheltered position and clear sandy bottom at 5–10 m, is the ideal setting: no currents, good visibility, and gentle marine life. Conditions are calm for the majority of the season from April through November.

Rhodes rewards diving as part of a broader itinerary. The medieval old town — walled, UNESCO-listed, and intact in a way that almost no other medieval city in Europe is — deserves a minimum of two full days of exploration. The site of ancient Kamiros, the hilltop castle town of Lindos with its acropolis, and the Valley of the Butterflies at Petaloudes make Rhodes one of the most content-rich Greek islands beyond the beach. Combining diving days with archaeological and cultural days in the old town makes for an itinerary that is difficult to improve on.

The Kalithea thermal springs complex near Rhodes Town — a stunning 1920s Italian-built bathhouse now used as an arts and event venue — has a dedicated dive site in Kalithea Bay that combines well with a visit to the historic spa building. The Rhodes diving season runs April through November, with peak conditions July–September. The Dodecanese ferry network from Rhodes connects to Kos, Kalymnos, Symi, Patmos, and Piraeus — making Rhodes a natural hub for a multi-island itinerary that includes diving, ancient archaeology (Lindos acropolis, Kamiros), and the extraordinary medieval old town, which rewards multiple days of unhurried exploration.
