Hidden Athens Itinerary

The Athens itinerary for curious travellers. Anafiotika, Byzantine churches, forgotten hills, covered arcades, neighbourhood markets and the spots Athenians keep to themselves.

Hidden Athens Itinerary

This itinerary is built around the Athens most visitors never find. It covers Anafiotika on the Acropolis slope, the Byzantine churches at traffic intersections, the covered arcades between Panepistimiou and Stadiou, Strefi Hill in Exarchia, the Kaisariani Monastery on the slopes of Hymettus, and the laiki in Kypseli. It is one of six Athens itineraries in the Teleporio Discover Athens guide, each designed for a specific type of traveller and time constraint.

How to Use This Itinerary

Athens is more walkable than it first appears. The historic centre, Plaka, Monastiraki, Psyrri, Thissio, and Koukaki form a connected pedestrian zone accessible entirely on foot from the Acropolis. The metro covers the wider city efficiently — clean, air-conditioned, and reliable. Taxis and Bolt/Uber fill the gaps for early morning or late night movement when the metro has stopped.

Practical Notes

Book any performance tickets — Herodes Atticus, Lycabettus Theatre, Epidaurus — well in advance for summer visits. The Acropolis is significantly more enjoyable at opening time (08:00) than at noon. Museums have air conditioning; ancient sites do not. In July and August, plan outdoor time for before 12:00 and after 17:00. In spring and autumn, no such planning is needed — the weather is close to ideal for all-day walking.

Getting Around Athens

The Athens metro is the backbone of city movement — clean, air-conditioned, and reliable. The three lines connect the airport, Piraeus port, and all central neighbourhoods. Taxis and Bolt are plentiful. For neighbourhood walking, the historic centre is compact: Plaka, Monastiraki, Psyrri, Thissio, and Koukaki form a continuous pedestrian zone of under four square kilometres, covering most of what first-time visitors want to see.
