A practical side-by-side comparison
Food & gastronomy
Sifnos: Sifnos is the food capital of the Cyclades — slow-cooked chickpea soup (revithada) baked in local clay ovens, mastello lamb, kakavia fish stew. A genuinely serious food destination.
Milos: Good fish tavernas but food is not the reason to visit Milos.
Beaches
Sifnos: Platys Gialos and Vathi are lovely — but small and enclosed. Not in the Milos league.
Milos: Among the Aegean's finest — Sarakiniko, Kleftiko, Firiplaka, Tsigrado. Outstanding.
Hiking
Sifnos: One of Greece's best hiking networks — Byzantine trails linking all villages, manageable distances, well-marked.
Milos: Some good walks but not the trail infrastructure of Sifnos.
Pottery & arts
Sifnos: Pottery has been made on Sifnos since ancient times — the ceramic tradition is active and excellent.
Milos: No particular arts tradition.
Crowds
Sifnos: Becoming more popular but still significantly quieter than Milos.
Milos: Sarakiniko has become a victim of Instagram — busy in July–August. Book the boat trip early.
Village character
Sifnos: Apollonia, Artemonas, and Kastro are genuinely beautiful — among the finest Cycladic villages.
Milos: Plaka and Tripiti are charming but the island's main appeal is landscape and beaches.
Best months to compare
Sifnos: April, May, June, September, October; Milos: May, June, September, October
The travel decision
Do both — they're on the same ferry line and complement each other perfectly. Three nights on Sifnos for the food and hiking, then two on Milos for the beaches and boat trip. If forced to choose one: Milos for the wow factor, Sifnos for the soul.
Questions about Sifnos and Milos
What is revithada?
Sifnos's signature dish — chickpeas slow-cooked overnight in a clay pot, seasoned with lemon and olive oil. Traditionally cooked in communal village ovens and still found in local restaurants on Sundays.
Is Sarakiniko on Milos as crowded as they say?
In July and August, yes — arrive before 9am or after 6pm. In May, June, September, and October it's much better. The lunar white volcanic landscape is genuinely extraordinary.
