Unique product

Lesvos: Ouzo and olive oil are part of Lesvos's food identity; producers and styles vary across the island.

Chios: Chios is renowned for the traditional commercial cultivation of mastic and its mastichochoria villages. Chios mastic is protected under the EU PDO name “Masticha Chiou”; the tree itself is not exclusive to the island.

Medieval villages

Lesvos: Molyvos (Mithymna) castle village is one of Greece's finest — a Byzantine castle above a stone-built harbour.

The travel decision

Both islands deserve more than the average Cyclades 3-night visit — ideally a week each. Lesvos is larger and more varied, with the best birdwatching in the country. Chios has the mastichochoria, which are in a league of their own architecturally, and Nea Moni is one of Greece's great Byzantine monuments. I'd start with Lesvos for size and scope, then Chios for depth and uniqueness.

Spring (April–May) is the peak migration season — over 300 species recorded. The salt lake at Kalloni and the Metochi pool are the best sites. The Lesvos Bird Fair is typically held in late May.
