Corfu vs Zakynthos — Which Ionian Island is Right for You?
Corfu or Zakynthos? Compare culture, beaches, wildlife, nightlife, and ferry access on two distinctive Ionian islands.
Both Corfu and Zakynthos are Ionian islands with no Meltemi, calmer seas than the Aegean, and lush green hillsides. But they attract very different travellers — and the experience on each island is markedly different.
Choose Corfu if…
Culture and history lovers; Foodies wanting authentic cuisine; Couples wanting elegance over party; Travellers arriving from Italy by ferry; Year-round visitors (Corfu works in winter)
Choose Zakynthos if…
Beach and photography lovers (Navagio); Wildlife and turtle enthusiasts; Sun and sea seekers; Those arriving from the Peloponnese
A practical side-by-side comparison
Architecture & history
Corfu: Corfu Old Town is UNESCO-listed Venetian architecture — one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean. The Liston arcade, the old fortresses, the Byzantine churches.
Zakynthos: Zakynthos Town was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake — pleasant but without the historic depth of Corfu.
Beaches
Corfu: Palaiokastritsa, Canal d'Amour at Sidari, Glyfada — beautiful Ionian beaches. Good but not as dramatic as Zakynthos.
Zakynthos: Navagio Shipwreck Beach is one of the world's most photographed. The Blue Caves are extraordinary. Zakynthos wins on headline beaches.
Wildlife
Corfu: Good birdwatching around the lagoons and Achilleion gardens. Less celebrated than Zakynthos.
Zakynthos: The loggerhead turtle nesting programme at Laganas is one of Europe's most significant conservation efforts. Unique and genuinely moving.
Nightlife & party scene
Corfu: Corfu has lively nightlife in Kavos and Benitses (notorious British party scene) — but the main town has elegant bars and cafés.
Zakynthos: Laganas has one of Greece's most intense British-dominated party scenes — very loud, very busy in August. Avoid if you want authentic Greece.
Getting there
Corfu: Igoumenitsa to Corfu: 1.5h. Brindisi/Bari to Corfu: 6–8h by overnight ferry from Italy. International airport with direct flights from UK.
Zakynthos: Killini to Zakynthos: 1.5h. Airport ZTH with direct UK flights. Good access.
Food & authenticity
Corfu: The Venetian and British colonial history gave Corfu a distinct cuisine (pastitsada, sofrito, bourdeto). The kumquat liqueur is unique to Corfu.
Zakynthos: Good Ionian cooking but less distinctive. More dominated by resort-style dining in peak season.
Best months to compare
Corfu: April, May, June, September, October; Zakynthos: May, June, September
The travel decision
Corfu is the better island for depth of experience — the Old Town alone justifies the trip. Zakynthos has Navagio, which is genuinely one of the world's most spectacular beaches. Choose Corfu for culture, architecture, and food; choose Zakynthos for the beach experience and the turtles. Both are accessible and well-organised — and both are better in May, June, or September than in August.
Questions about Corfu and Zakynthos
Which Ionian island is calmer?
Wind and sea conditions vary by route, vessel and date, including in the Ionian. Check the forecast and current operator notices for either crossing.
Is Corfu good in winter?
Yes — one of the few Greek islands that functions well in winter. The Old Town has good restaurants, the museums are open, and the Venetian architecture is beautiful without summer crowds.
Can I visit both in one trip?
Both are Ionian islands but not directly connected by ferry. You'd need to go via the mainland (Igoumenitsa or Killini). Possible but requires planning.
