The Rhodes to Karpathos Crossing

Blue Star Ferries operates on the southern Dodecanese route serving this crossing as part of the Piraeus–Rhodes–Karpathos chain; the route is not daily and the crossing is one of the most Meltemi-exposed in the Greek domestic ferry network; Pigadia (Karpathos Town) is the main arrival point on the island's east coast

The crossing takes 4–6 hours by conventional Blue Star ferry depending on sea state. 2–3 times weekly as part of the Blue Star Dodecanese service; check current schedule carefully as this is not a standalone route — the vessel continues or connects from other Dodecanese stops

Sea Conditions and Beaufort Exposure

very high — the open water between Rhodes and Karpathos is one of the most consistently rough sea corridors in the Greek network in July and August; the Meltemi funnels powerfully through the gap between the Dodecanese and Crete, with Beaufort 7–8 not uncommon at the peak of summer; conventional Blue Star ferries make the crossing in conditions where catamarans cannot operate; the Sky Express seasonal flight from Rhodes to Karpathos Airport (AOK) is often the more practical option

Karpathos is best visited in May–June or September when the Meltemi is weaker and the island is quieter; July–August is the windiest and busiest period; the north village of Olympos, famous for its preserved traditional dress and customs, is worth the extra effort of the caïque journey from Pigadia

Booking and Tickets

verify the non-daily service operates on your required dates before building an itinerary around it; the Sky Express seasonal flight (approximately 45 minutes) is often more practical given wind exposure and limited ferry frequency; Karpathos accommodation fills completely in peak summer — book accommodation well before transport tickets

Arrival

Pigadia port is a quiet, authentic working harbour far removed from mass tourism infrastructure; the town itself has good fish tavernas, a long beach within walking distance, and a relaxed local atmosphere; the main island experience beyond Pigadia requires local transport — the caïque to Diafani on the north coast (2.5 hours by sea) gives access to Olympos village, where residents still wear traditional costume and speak a dialect preserving ancient Greek features; hire a vehicle in Pigadia for south coast beaches
