The Athens (Piraeus) to Folegandros Crossing

SeaJets, Hellenic Seaways, and Blue Star conventional ferries serve Folegandros — a small island in the southern Cyclades known for its dramatic cliff-top chora, its absence of tourist kitsch, and its recognition among in-the-know travellers as the most beautiful village setting in the Cyclades; Karavostasis port is a small harbour on the island's eastern coast

The crossing takes 6–8 hours by catamaran (often with multiple stops: Serifos, Sifnos, Milos); 8–10 hours by conventional Blue Star. 1–3 departures daily in summer depending on routing; Folegandros is at the end of the western Cyclades route which has lower base frequency than the central corridor

Sea Conditions and Beaufort Exposure

Folegandros is in the southern end of the western Cyclades with high Meltemi exposure; the island's cliff-top setting means the chora is in the wind even on calm days; Karavostasis port is somewhat sheltered but the approach can be rough in Beaufort 5–6 on catamarans

Booking and Tickets

accommodation on Folegandros is extremely limited — the island is small and deliberately low-development; book accommodation weeks in advance in July–August; the island attracts a repeat-visit crowd who keep bookings tight; ferry timing to Folegandros should be planned around accommodation availability, not the other way around

Arrival

Karavostasis port is a small, functional harbour; a bus runs up the steep hill to Folegandros Chora (the main village) which sits on the cliff edge 150 metres above the sea; the Chora's three linked piazzas, the Kastro (a medieval walled district) and the church of Panagia above the cliff are the defining experiences of the island; swimming is at Agali bay (bus from Chora) and at several beaches accessible by footpath
