Traveling Greece on a Budget
How to travel Greece affordably. Cheap islands, deck passage, shoulder season savings, budget food tips, and how to island-hop Greece without overspending.
The Biggest Savings Lever: Timing
Greece can be extremely affordable or surprisingly expensive depending almost entirely on when and where you go. May to mid-June and September to October offer 30–50% lower accommodation and food prices than July–August, with warm weather, open facilities, and far less crowding. The sea is the same. The difference is the postseason date on your booking.
Budget-Friendly Islands
Island selection is the second most important budget decision. Naxos — the largest Cycladic island — has its own food production and significantly lower prices than Mykonos or Santorini. Folegandros stays cheap precisely because its limited tourism keeps prices honest. Tilos in the Dodecanese is one of the most affordable inhabited islands in Greece. Ikaria, famous as a Blue Zone longevity island, has deep local food culture and very low prices. Samos, Lefkada, and the less-visited Dodecanese islands all offer genuine value.
Ferry Budget Tips
Deck passage on a Blue Star overnight ferry costs a fraction of a cabin — bring a sleeping bag and save the difference for taverna meals. Book summer sailings two to three months ahead; last-minute July–August ferry prices can be double the early booking price. Use the slower conventional ferries rather than high-speed catamarans — the crossing takes longer but can cost half as much. Plan hub-and-spoke routes from Athens (Piraeus) rather than multiple island-to-island hops, which accumulate costs quickly.
