Airport Accessibility in Greece
Accessible air travel in Greece. Athens International Airport accessibility services, island airport facilities, special assistance booking, and transferring from Athens to ferry ports.
Athens International Airport
Athens International Airport (ATH) is fully accessible throughout with accessible check-in desks, special assistance lounges airside and landside, ambulift vehicles for boarding and deplaning, tactile paving, induction hearing loops, wheelchair loan, and an accessible metro station connecting the terminal to the city. Request special assistance through your airline at the time of booking using IATA codes: WCHR for wheelchair between gate and aircraft, WCHC for full wheelchair assistance, DEAF, BLIND, or MAAS (meet and assist).
Athens Airport to Piraeus Ferry Port
The most accessible transfer options from Athens airport to Piraeus ferry port are the metro (Line 3 to Monastiraki, transfer to Line 1 Green to Piraeus — 35 minutes, fully accessible), pre-booked accessible taxi or UBER Access (40–60 minutes), or the X96 Express Bus with modern low-floor accessible buses (70–90 minutes, ask for Plateia Karaïskaki stop at the port).
Island Airports
All 14 Greek regional airports managed by Fraport Greece provide PRM (Passengers with Reduced Mobility) services. Key island airports with good accessibility include Rhodes (RHO), Heraklion Crete (HER), Corfu (CFU), Kos (KGS), Mykonos (JMK), and Santorini (JTR). Book special assistance at time of reservation and arrive at least two hours before departure. At smaller island airports, arriving early makes the critical difference in getting assistance smoothly arranged.
Domestic flights between Greek islands are operated by Sky Express, Olympic Air, and Aegean Airlines. These are short routes on turboprop or narrow-body jets. For wheelchair users, confirm with the airline which aircraft type is assigned to your route — some smaller aircraft have step-only boarding with no jetway option, and ambulift availability must be requested in advance. On routes where both ferry and flight options exist, the flight can be significantly more accessible in practice than a long overnight ferry crossing.
