Andros Trail — Running Byzantine Stone Paths on the Greenest Cyclades Island

Andros Trail is the largest island trail running event in the Cyclades, held each spring on Andros — the greenest and most water-rich island in the archipelago. Routes follow an exceptional network of Byzantine stone paths maintained by the Andros Routes project, through terraced hillsides, forests, watermills, and traditional whitewashed villages. Andros has one of the most comprehensive waymarked walking networks in the Greek islands — the trail race leverages this infrastructure, putting runners on paths that have connected island communities for centuries.

Andros is reached from Rafina port (1.5–2 hours by ferry) — not Piraeus. Rafina is 30 minutes from Athens International Airport. Confirm the race date and distances at androstrail.gr before planning travel.

Andros — The Cyclades' Water Island

Andros is the greenest and most water-rich island in the Cyclades — a product of its position at the northern end of the archipelago, where it catches more precipitation than the southern islands. Springs, watermills, and streams run through the interior valleys even in summer. The water quality is exceptional; Andros water is bottled commercially and the spring network that feeds the villages is visible along the trail race routes. This is dramatically different to the dry-stone barrenness of Mykonos or the volcanic landscape of Santorini.

The Andros Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros town (housing the Goulandris collection, one of the best private modern art collections in Greece) make the island a cultural destination of the first rank alongside its natural landscape. Chora (Andros town) — built on a rocky peninsula projecting into the sea — is one of the most elegant island capitals in the Cyclades: neoclassical mansions, a Venetian tower on an offshore rock, and a waterfront that looks east to the open Aegean. Spring is the ideal time: the island is green, the wildflowers are out, the museums are open, and the Byzantine trail network is at its most beautiful.

The Andros Trail race typically offers distances ranging from 13 km to over 100 km (the full distance covers multiple Byzantine path networks across the island). The ferry from Rafina is the only access — no airport and no Piraeus ferry serve Andros. Rafina is a 30-minute taxi ride from Athens Airport.
