The Greek Ferry Boarding Process

Greek ferry boarding is managed by gate number and vessel name, not departure time. The gate for your vessel is announced on the port departure board and also posted at the port authority desk. Arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before departure for foot passengers. Vehicle boarding queues form one to two hours before large vessel departures — if you are taking a car or motorbike on the ferry, follow the vehicle check-in process at the relevant lane.

Checking the Departure Board

Every Greek port has a departure board listing vessel name, gate number, departure time, and destination. The vessel name on the board must match the vessel name on your ticket — not just the destination. Booking a ticket on Blue Star Paros and boarding a different Blue Star vessel at the same time going to the same destination is a common boarding error on busy days at Piraeus when multiple vessels sail simultaneously to overlapping destinations.

At Piraeus: Which Gate?

Piraeus is a large port with multiple gates (Ε1 through Ε12 and beyond) spread along several kilometres of waterfront. The gates for conventional ferry departures to the Cyclades are typically E1 through E6. Crete ferries usually depart from E7-E9. Dodecanese vessels from the E10-E12 range. These are approximations — always confirm your gate from the departure board on the day. The port has a free shuttle bus between gate areas, which is useful with heavy luggage.

Boarding with an E-Ticket

Most Greek ferry companies now accept e-tickets via QR code on a mobile screen or printed. The gate agent scans or checks your ticket at boarding. Have your ticket accessible before joining the queue — finding it while holding luggage in a boarding crowd is slower than it sounds. If boarding as a group, have one person hold all tickets rather than each individual searching independently at the gate.

Once On Board

On a large conventional ferry: find your seat or cabin assignment before exploring. Store main luggage in the designated hold areas, storage corridors, or under seats. Locate the life jacket storage and nearest muster station within the first few minutes. On overnight crossings, the restaurants and cafeteria on the main passenger decks open approximately 30 minutes after departure. Premium cabin bookings typically include access to a separate lounge on the upper decks.
