What Does Greek Island Hopping Actually Cost?
The honest answer: a seven-night Greek island hopping trip can cost anything from 700 euros to 5,000 euros per person, depending entirely on how you travel. The components that drive the total are ferry tickets, accommodation, food, and local transport. Each of those has a wide range in Greece, and the gap between budget and comfortable is substantial.
Ferry Ticket Costs
A deck ticket on a conventional ferry is the cheapest way to travel between islands — typically 15 to 40 euros for a mid-length Cyclades crossing. High-speed catamaran tickets on the same route cost 40 to 80 euros. Cabins on overnight ferries (Piraeus to Crete, Piraeus to Santorini) cost 50 to 120 euros for a two-berth cabin. A five-island trip budget should allow 150 to 350 euros per person for ferries, depending on route choices and vessel type.
Accommodation Tiers
Budget: 35 to 60 euros per night for a studio apartment or basic guesthouse outside the main tourist village, with shared or private facilities. Mid-range: 80 to 150 euros per night for a well-positioned hotel or private apartment with air conditioning and good island access. Premium: 200 to 500 euros per night for caldera-view hotels in Santorini, boutique stays in Hydra, or the better properties on Mykonos. Accommodation choice drives more cost variation than any other category in a Greek island budget.
Food and Drink
A full meal at a local taverna — grilled fish, salad, bread, local wine, water — costs 18 to 30 euros per person. A tourist-facing restaurant in Oia or Mykonos Town charges 40 to 70 euros per person for the same quality meal. Coffee runs 2.50 to 4 euros at a local kafeneion; 5 to 7 euros at a branded cafe in a resort area. Travellers who eat where locals eat reduce their daily food spend significantly: look for the menu in Greek, the tables with paper covers, and the TV showing the football.
Sample Weekly Budget: Budget Traveller
Seven nights, two island stops, deck ferry tickets, budget accommodation sharing costs: 700 to 950 euros per person. Meals at local tavernas, self-catering breakfast, minimal activities. This is achievable in shoulder season (May, October) and very difficult in August peak.
Sample Weekly Budget: Comfortable Traveller
Seven nights, two to three island stops, fast ferry tickets, mid-range hotels: 1,400 to 2,200 euros per person. Includes a mix of taverna and restaurant meals, one or two day trips, and reasonable transport. This is the realistic mid-range for a comfortable first Greece trip in June or September.
