Why October Is the Best Month Few People Choose
Greece in October offers a combination that peak season cannot: sea temperatures still around 23 to 24 degrees Celsius, air temperatures of 22 to 27 degrees most days, accommodation prices 30 to 50 percent lower than August, and a tourist population that has reduced to a fraction of its summer volume. The infrastructure — ferries, restaurants, accommodation — is still fully operational. The beaches are empty before 11:00 and after 17:00. The locals are visibly more relaxed.
Weather in October
Early October (1st to 15th) is reliably warm and sunny across the southern Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete. Late October brings a higher chance of rain, particularly in Corfu and the Ionian islands. The Aegean islands — Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Rhodes — tend to stay dry longer into the month. The Meltemi wind season ends by late September, which actually makes October crossings more predictable than August ones from a cancellation-risk perspective.
Which Islands Work Well in October
Santorini and Mykonos operate fully in early October and start reducing hours from around the 20th. Crete is excellent throughout October — large enough to always have activity, and the inland areas (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion) are better appreciated without the summer heat. Rhodes old town is at its most pleasant in October, when the medieval streets can be explored without queuing through crowds. Naxos and Paros work well through mid-October. Smaller islands (Folegandros, Symi, Halki) may have reduced ferry frequency from mid-October.
Ferry Schedule Changes in October
Ferry schedules in Greece operate on seasonal timetables, and many routes reduce frequency in October. Check specific departure dates rather than assuming summer schedules continue — some connections that run daily in August drop to three or four times a week in October. Book ferry tickets in advance for October travel, as the reduced frequency means fewer alternatives if your first-choice departure is full. Ferryhopper and individual operator websites show October availability from around August.
What to Expect at Restaurants and Accommodation
Most restaurants and accommodation in the main tourist areas of popular islands operate until the end of October. Some begin closing from around the 20th, particularly smaller operations that have a fixed season. Calling ahead to confirm a restaurant is open in late October is sensible planning. The trade-off for slightly reduced choice is significantly better service — the same restaurants that were overwhelmed in August have time to execute properly in October, and the quality of the experience typically improves.
