10 Days: The Minimum for a Proper Greek Island Trip

Ten days allows two or three island stops with enough time on each to feel settled rather than passing through. The biggest planning error in a 10-day Greek itinerary is over-ambition: four or five islands sounds exciting and results in five ferry days, five check-ins, and never enough time anywhere. Three islands with three nights each, plus arrival and departure days in Athens, is the architecture that consistently delivers the best experience.

Itinerary A: Cyclades Classic

Days 1-2: Athens. Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Monastiraki, evening in Psyrri. Day 3: Morning ferry from Piraeus to Paros (4.5 hours, conventional ferry or 3.5 hours high-speed). Three nights on Paros. Naoussa, Santa Maria beach, Antiparos day trip. Day 6: 30-minute ferry to Naxos. Three nights on Naxos. Agios Prokopios beach, old town, Apeiranthos village by scooter. Day 9: Ferry from Naxos back to Piraeus. Final night in Athens near the airport. Day 10: Departure.

Itinerary B: Dodecanese Route

Days 1-2: Athens. Direct flight Athens to Rhodes (45 minutes) on day 2 afternoon. Days 2-5: Rhodes. Old town (two full days minimum), Lindos, Anthony Quinn Bay. Day 6: Ferry from Rhodes to Symi (50 minutes). Two nights on Symi. Day 8: Ferry from Symi back to Rhodes, same-day flight Athens or Kos. Days 8-10: Kos — Hippocrates plane tree, Asklepion, beach at Tigaki. Day 10: Direct flight home from Kos, or ferry/flight to Athens.

Itinerary C: Crete in Depth

Days 1-2: Athens. Overnight ferry from Piraeus to Heraklion (7.5 hours, book cabin). Days 3-5: Eastern Crete — Heraklion, Knossos, the archaeological museum. Days 5-7: Central Crete — drive through the Mesara plain, Matala beach, Spili. Days 7-9: Western Crete — Rethymno old town, Chania, Balos lagoon by boat. Day 10: Ferry or direct flight back to Athens. Crete is the only Greek island that genuinely rewards a 10-day single-island itinerary for a first visit.

Planning Notes for Any 10-Day Route

Book ferry tickets at least two weeks in advance for travel in June, July, August. Book accommodation before booking ferries — on some routes, departure times are fixed and accommodation near the port matters. Build one free day into any 10-day itinerary to absorb a weather delay or cancellation without cascading consequences. Do not book the homeward flight on the same day as the final ferry leg.

Use Teleporio's route guides to check Beaufort sensitivity ratings for each crossing in your 10-day plan. A route with high Meltemi exposure and an afternoon departure in August is the most common source of itinerary disruption on a Greek island trip. Identifying that one weak connection before you book — and switching to a morning departure or a conventional ferry — takes five minutes and prevents the cascade that turns a well-planned trip into a stressful one.
