The Greek Ferry Luggage Challenge
On Greek ferries, luggage goes into the hold or designated deck storage when you board and is not accessible during the crossing. This is the fundamental planning constraint: everything you might need during a four to nine hour crossing — medication, phone charger, passport, tickets, food, a layer for the air conditioning — must be in a separate daypack that stays with you. Not in the main bag. With you.
How Much to Bring
Island hopping works best with carry-on sized luggage or a backpack in the 30 to 40 litre range. A 20-kilogram checked bag that was perfectly manageable at the airport becomes a liability at Athinios port in Santorini, where the bus queue is steep and the taxi ranks are chaotic in peak season. Consider every transition: ferry disembarkation, port to accommodation, accommodation check-out with luggage, ferry boarding — all of these happen multiple times in a one-week island hop. Lighter is always better.
Soft Bags vs Hard Cases
Soft-sided rolling bags or backpacks are significantly more practical on Greek ferries than hard-sided suitcases. Ferry gangways and hold storage areas are not luggage-friendly for large rigid cases. Backpacks have the added advantage of leaving both hands free for boarding — sometimes necessary when boarding involves a narrow gangway with a handrail on one side and a passenger queue on the other.
Daypack Essentials for the Crossing
Keep in your daypack during any Greek ferry crossing: all medications, phone and charger plus a portable battery, earphones, passport and all tickets (digital plus screenshot backup), enough cash for the crossing and arrival (port ATMs are not always reliable), one layer of clothing (ferries are air-conditioned to an aggressive degree in summer), snacks for crossings over three hours, and a reusable water bottle. The cafeteria on most Greek ferries is functional but expensive and slow during boarding periods.
Luggage Storage at Athens Ports
Piraeus has luggage storage facilities in the main terminal building. If you arrive in Athens before your ferry boarding time and need to explore the city without your bags, the Athens city centre (Monastiraki, Syntagma) also has commercial luggage storage services. Rafina port has limited storage — plan to go directly to the port for Rafina departures. Heraklion port has storage at the terminal.
